Watercolor Painting - Portrait of Girl Update

Well this was going along nicely until I decided to darken the top background a little to add a little more depth. Should be fairly straightforward but for some reason when I added a darker wash of my background colors, ugly black dots appeared! Trying to darken it to cover them up made things go from bad to worse and this is the updated of me trying to remove the dark, yucky color that emerged hmmm.

Sooo, I think I will leave this for a bit until I decide what to do about this calamity :) I think I may use some gouache or gesso or possibly even acrylic to cover the black ugly dots on the background but will have to do some experimenting.

The black dots don't really bother me...the dark at the top may lend a more serious tone to what was previously a rather light hearted pose, but I kinda dig that too.

I say keep them!

Thanks Steven, yes it definitely changes the feel! I am toying with the idea of trying a technique that I saw recently of creating a really dark background with rich colors and then using gouache to lighten it up again leaving swatches of color peaking through and creating a ton of texture....hmm, but leaving it with the dots, much less terrifying...I will have to ponder :)

I just read your latest post and if it helps, I just uploaded this update the same time I updated my kid's birthday photos. I copied all the photos at once to my harddrive and as I was deleting them from my camera I realized it did not copy all the images. Of course I hit cancel immediately. I ALWAYS check the transfer, ok almost always. Of course the photos I missed were of the cake, blowing out the candles & cutting the cake, ugh, only the BEST parts :( Damn technology!

Ouch, that *really* stinks!

I'm looking forward to seeing what you decide with this piece!

Those aren't yucky black dots -- that's *texture*. :)

lol thanks Andrea, it is starting to grow on me. I was thinking this morning of even brightening up some areas to make the dots more obvious.

I think I am just a control freak and it was not what I intended but, yes, it IS texture isn't it :) Funny how that works ;)
