Suite E Exhibit at the Outlet in June, 2009

I am excited to say that I will be exhibiting with Suite E Life Drawing group at the Outlet this summer in June. The dates have not been nailed down exactly yet but will be in June and possibly July in the Outlet, adjacent to the Ticketmaster booth. I exhibit my artwork there for a solo exhibit in November and was quite happy with the exhibit. It is such a great area surrounded by art and artists.

Life Drawing Sketch

This is a quick, 15 minutes quick, sketch of a friend of mine from Suite E Life Drawing group. We decided to take a night and do 15 minutes portrait sketches of each other and it was a blast. We all took turns 'modeling' and the other frantically sketched until the timer went off. We kept rotating the groups so we all got a variety of subjects and the class flew by!

I was thoroughly exhausted by the end of the evening but I hope we do it again soon as it was great practice!

Life Drawing Classes at Suite E

Suite E Life DrawingI attended my weekly life drawing class at the Suite E Life Drawing group located at Poirer Recreation Center in Coquitlam. I am so lucky to have such a great life drawing group to attend. I go most weeks and I have seen a big improvement in my drawing and 'seeing' skills. Most of my life drawings look pretty horrible but it is all a means to an end and it is such a great way to relax after a long day.

This is one of the sketch I did last night in about 30 minutes. I am working larger than I usually do I think this is about 12x28" so I am finding it a bit of a challenge to get the proportions right and am trying to focus on the 'outline' rather than getting caught up in the shading as I often do :) The model is one of my favorites as he always does such amazing poses that literally throw your mind into right mode.

Life Drawing Graphite Portrait

Life drawing is so theraputic! This portrait was drawn in 30 minutes and was the first portrait in a series of 3 that I drew of the model during my last life drawing class. I am quite happy with it and I can see the difference that regular practice from life can make in a short period of time.

Life Drawing Portrait in Graphite

Well, it is week two of my life drawing class and I decided to focus on just the face for this one. I started quite small on this one not realizing that sustained pose meant for the whole night :) Of course, by the time I got to my second attempt I think I was too tired as he was starting to look very tired in the portrait ;) I used HB and 6B graphite pencils for this one. The likness is not too bad and I think the proportions are pretty close so I am happy with my attempt. Although, he has a bump in the bridge of his nose that I could just not capture .... I am sure I will get a chance to draw him again though :)

Life Drawing Figurative Portrait in Graphite

Yay summer is over and my life drawing class has finally started...hmm perhaps my priorities are mixed up....no, I don't think so :) I have not drawn from life for several years as I draw mostly graphite portraits from photos and usually draw children and animals, neither of which will sit long for a portait to be drawn! This is my first 'attempt' at a 50 minute portrait of Iva. There are many issues with it, her head is too large and the likeness is not what I would like, but overal I am happy with my attempt and I don't think Iva will hold a grudge ;)

Life drawing is very different from the tightly detailed pencil drawings that I generally work on and I am really enjoying it although I am still getting the hang of which pencil to use and when. I generally use 2B, F and B for my detailed portraits whereas with the life drawing portraits I need to use 8B, 6B and HB which encourage me much looser. I will be posting weekly so that I have a record of my 'progress' throughout the year. Should be interesting!
