Port Moody Art Association Demo

Watercolor Seashell Demo at Port Moody Art AssociationMonday night I did a demo at the Port Moody Art Association using my seashells as a reference for a watercolor painting. I am working on a series of shells so thought this might fit in nicely for the demo and chose two larger images of my shells to hopefully show more of the detail while doing the demo. The painting is not finished but this is as far as I could get during the demo, whew!

The sand in the background had already been painted in to allow time to dry using yellow ochre, indian red & cerulean blue. The sky was then painted using cerulean blue, permanent alizarin crimson & naples yellow. I will likely develop both the sand and the sky a bit more once the shells are completed. The shells were then painted in using thin layers to build up the texture. The left shell was painted using burnt sienna, burnt umber & sepia for the stripes. Washes and dry brushed layers were added for the lighter areas using yellow ochre & burnt sienna.

The shadows were deepened using a gray created from cobalt blue, permanent rose & transparent yellow. This same gray was used for the right seashell with touches of burnt sienna for a warm glow. The dark shadows underneath the shell were created by mixing sepia with french ultramarine and painting several layers to built up texture and shape to the shadows. The final step was to paint in some highlights using Aquacover by Creative Mark. It is similar to gouache or white watercolor so you can use that instead but I prefer the texture of the Aquacover. I will post the updated painting once completed, I am calling it Lean on Me.

Watercolor Demo at Art Focus Group

Watercolor Demo SeashellsI promised at the demo that I would post a bit of notes on my blog so people didn't have to wright everything down & try to watch at the same time. So, hopefully this will help!

The colors I used for this painting are Indian Red, Yellow Ochre & Cerulean Blue to create a purplish mix and a separate yellowish mix. These three colors combine together to create what is called a Desert Triad and has a ton of possibility's depending on the amount of pigments used and the amount of water used.
I just discovered this mix and I think it will take me a long time to use all the possibilities from these colors! These colors are also used separately in the painting along with Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, French Ultramarine & Sepia. I created a dark brown mix using Burnt Umber, Sepia and French Ultramarine and also used a mix of French Ultramarine and Burnt Umber to give a nice rich cool black. I then built up the layers with these colors slowing varying the ratios to give more variety & texture.

Watercolor Live Demo at Art Focus Group was a blast

I was happy to see such a great turnout last night at the demo. I was worried it would be me and the people setting up as we had snow...yes snow at the end of February and the roads were getting icy as the temperature dropped but people braved the weather and we had a great turnout. I think the demo went well, I was a little nervous as it was my first but it was so much fun and people asked such great questions that it made it go by so fast I was shocked when I checked the time and it was already and hour through, yikes!

I will post a photo of the completed artwork as well as instructions on the colors used and techniques. Thanks again to everyone for coming out! I learned a lot and am really looking forward to the next demo at Place des Arts on April 5.

Watercolor Live Demo at Art Focus Group - Feb 25

Watercolor Demo
Tonight is the night I will be doing a live demo at the Outlet for the Art Focus Group. I will be using the shells photo below that I took for reference and I am really looking forward to it. I packed up everything....I think....last night and am surprised how portable watercolors are as I usually just paint in my studio. It is just as easy to pack up a graphite kit for demos as it is for watercolor, well almost. Another great reason to love watercolors :) The Outlet is located at Leigh Square in Port Coquitlam.

Suite E helps Launch Spirit Week

Myda and I had fun at the Spirit Week launch yesterday and met many new artists and art lovers. The entertainment was really great as well, it was nice to listen to live music while I work...beats listening to the same mp3s over and over again :) I managed to get a fair bit of work done on a graphite portrait of an asian lady that I am working on and I am quite happy with it so far. I will post an update once it is completed.

Live Demo at Place des Arts - April 5, 2009

It looks like the date for my demo at Place des Arts will be April 5. The staff there have been busy developing a new program called Family Day which is a chance to learn about art in a fun interactive way. The first Family Day was held last weekend which included a tour of the exhibitions that are currently on display with guest artists.

After the tour, there were three drop-in style workshops geared for all ages. This gave everyone the chance to create their own artworks based on what they learned during the tour. Michael Fera (they guy holding the palette & brush in the cartoon) then hosted some interactive art activities. Talk about an afternoon well spent!

I think the format will be similar on April 5 and I am totally excited to see how it all unfolds. It sounds like a great program, what a great idea! Check out their site for future dates and to register for the upcoming Family Days on April 5 and May 10 at http://www.placedesarts.ca/content.asp?chapterID=2&subchapterID=2&pageID=2&portal=1&eventID=84

Still a few more tweaks to her eyes, mouth & eyebrows to nail down the likeness. Just little bits off that are throwing things off...I think :) Bunny is complete, wew, what a lot of fur!

Update on the demo drawing

Here is an update of the portrait I started at the demo at the Outlet in November. I did not get too much done at the Outlet but I have gotten a fair bit done now. The resemblance is still off a bit but it is getting closer. The portrait will be a christmas gift and the background will be very dark as it is in the lower right hand corner. I want to leave the darks until the end to prevent smuding but I wanted a bit done to better judge the tonal range for the portrait.

Art Demo Photos at the Outlet

Here are a couple of photos of me working at Artisan Craft Fair at the Outlet on the weekend. It was a lot of fun and I met some great people and fellow artists and crafters.
There were a few other painters set up there with beautiful original paintings and prints for sale. There were also some really cool jewelery artisans there and of course some amazing pottery. I tried to purchase a piece but it had already been sold, of course I should have bought it when I saw it when I was hanging my artwork earlier in the week....you snooze you lose ;) But luckily the potter, Joan Grisley from the Tri-City Potters is open to doing custom work so all is not lost!
